RiverHawks Bow Out at NCAAs
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. --- Top-ranked and undefeated Armstrong Atlantic State rolled to a 5-0 win over No. 20 Northeastern State (OK) on Wednesday morning at Sanlando Park in the Round of 16 of the 2010 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.
The loss ended the RiverHawks' season at 15-5.
The defending national champions improved to 30-0 and advanced into Thursday's quarterfinals, where they will face second-ranked Barry University, a 5-0 winner over Nebraska-Kearney.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in doubles as seventh-ranked Gabriella Kovacs and Sona Novakova collected an 8-0 win over Claire Chanay and Ivanna Belejova at No. 2 doubles. Second-ranked Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau downed 11th-ranked Zuzanna Osinka and Emina Spirtovic, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, before No. 23-ranked Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Karolina Cichon and Michaela Romanova at No. 3 doubles.
AASU clinched the match with a pair of straight-set wins in singles action. No. 27-ranked Beckmann logged a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chanay at No. 5 singles and 23rd-ranked Kovacs earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Belejova at No. 4 singles.
