Tennis Players Advance
TOPEKA, Kan. --- Northeastern State continued to fare well at the Wilson 2009 South Central Women's Championships.
In the Singles Round of 16, Zuzanna Osinska advanced with a pair of victories on Saturday. Osinska defeated Drame of Incarnate Word, 6-1, 6-0, before beating Tompkins of St. Edward's, 6-1, 6-3. She will be in Sunday's semifinals against an opponent to be determined.
Emina Spirtovic won her first singles match of the day by edging Abilene Christian's Pavlin 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. However, Spirtovic bowed out in the quarterfinals to Washburn's Lenguyn, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action late Friday, Osinska and Spirtovic beat Leston and Hoffman of Northwest Missouri State, 6-4, 6-2, then earned a straight 6-3 set victory over Olsson and Hendrickson from Southwest Baptist. On Saturday, the duo teamed up on Newman's Ferreria/Balerin 6-1, 6-2 and are playing another match late in the day Saturday.
Also on Friday, Karolina Cichon and Michaela Romanova beat East Central's Arguello and Villes, 7-6 (5), 6-3, then took a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) verdict over Southwest Baptist's Book and Schmidt. The No. 2 doubles, however, lost to Pavlin and Walker of Abilene Christian, 6-0, 6-2, to end their title hopes.
