Late Goal Lifts RiverHawks
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Emily Voges converted a corner kick from Katie Valdez with just 2:11 remaining and Northeastern State escaped with a 2-1 Lone Star Conference soccer victory over Incarnate Word in the first-ever women's home match played under the lights at RiverHawks Pitch.
The win lifted the RiverHawks to 7-5-5 overall and 3-4-3 in league play, while the Cardinals dropped to 8-6-2 and 6-4.
Celeste St. Gemme scored in the 13th minute to give Northeastern State a 1-0 lead as Valdez collected her first of two assists on the evening. The lead lasted until the 26th minute when UIW's Sam Johnson got a friendly bounce off the far post from 20-yards out to tie the match at 1-1.
In the waning moments of regulation, the RiverHawks got a corner kick. Valdez placed the ball nicely into the box and Voges headed in the game-winner at the 87:49 mark to provide the difference.
The match was statistically even with UIW getting 16 shots (six on goal), compared to 15 for the RiverHawks, 10 of which were on target. Deb Hill gathered in five saves.
Northeastern State will conclude the regular season on Sunday when it hosts Angelo State.
