RiverHawks Defend Title, Kirkpatrick Medalist

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State defended its championship for the third consecutive year by winning the 13th Annual NSU Women's Golf Classic at Cherry Springs Golf Club here Tuesday.

The RiverHawks also made history by shooting the lowest round in school history -- a 295 -- en route to the championship. NSU survived a modest charge from Midwestern State, which carded a final round of 296. However, the RiverHawks earned the team title by a whopping 11 strokes.

Kelsey Kirkpatrick unseated Whitney McAteer for medalist honors. Kirkpatrick fired a first round of one-under-par 71, then added a one-over 73 today to finish at even-par 144 for the tournament. McAteer, who had won the event the previous two years, narrowly missed her third straight, just one stroke behind Kirkpatrick, at 145. McAteer birdied 16 and 17 to finish at one-under for the day.

Behind NSU and Midwestern State were Arkansas-Fort Smith and Arkansas Tech which tied for third at 641 and Southwestern Oklahoma fifth at 647.
