McAteer Earns National Bid
AMARILLO, Texas --- Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer extended her golf season on Tuesday, but her teammates saw the season come to a crashing halt.
McAteer beat Central Oklahoma's Chaney Uhles on the first playoff hole to earn a berth in next week's NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships. The Jenks junior solidified the third, and final, individual spot in the national tournament with a par, while Uhles had bogey after each finished the 3-day event at 19-over-par.
It came with little fanfare after McAteer fired an uncharacteristically-high 82 in the final round to fall from third all the way to seventh. The top three individuals not part of the three advancing teams earn NCAA Tournament berths. McAteer finished the 54-hole event with rounds of 76-77-82.
As a team, the RiverHawks carded the highest round of the day, 329, as none of the five were able to find consistency. Kelsey Kirkpatrick had the team's best scorecard, seven-over-par 77, with McAteer and Danielle Wright at 82, Shauynda Petree 86 and Michelle Miron 87.
Tarleton State collected the regional championship at +27 (923). St. Edward's (939) and Western Washington (943) also move on to the team championship. Joining McAteer as individuals are Sonoma State's Spencer Heller and Tiffany Hewetson of Grand Canyon.
