RiverHawks Impressive at Tarleton Classic
GRANBURY, Texas – Northeastern State led by sophomore Whitney McAteer placed third in the 18-team Tarleton State Classic field Tuesday at Granbury, Texas.
The RiverHawks fired a second round 309, to finish with a two day total of 613, just 11 strokes back of tournament champion and host school Tarleton State at 602 on the par 72, 6,216 yard Harbor Lakes Golf Course.
“The conditions were much tougher today,” said Northeastern State head coach Scott Varner. “I was really proud of the way our kids competed. They came a long way this week and it was a total team effort.”
McAteer finished just three strokes back of medalist Georgiana Dunn of Grand Canyon. McAteer fired a second round 75 to go along with her opening 75 to finish at 150. Dunn shot a 77 on Tuesday to go along with her opening 70 to finish at 147.
Kelsay Kirkpatrick shot an 80 to go along with her opening74 to finish at 154, to tie for 16th position.
“Whitney (McAteer) and Kelsay (Kirkpatrick) are establishing themselves as great young players,” said Varner. Liz (Cagle) and Shaunda (Petree) finished great today. We are learning to finish and to take care of the little things.”
Following Tarleton State in the team scoring was Grand Canyon at 612, Northeastern State at 613, with West Texas A&M and St. Edwards at 624.
