Defense Clamps Down For Win
AUSTIN, Texas --- Northeastern State overcame a sluggish first half with a brilliant final 20 minutes and knocked off Quincy (IL), 64-49, in the opening round of the St. Edward's New Year's Classic here Friday afternoon.
The 14th-ranked RiverHawks improved to 10-1 on the year. Quincy fell to 6-3.
NSU fell behind 31-23 at the half by shooting a dismal 29 percent from the floor in the period, while its opponents were 7-of-13 from behind the arc and 12-of-24 overall.
However, the RiverHawks shook off the rust from a 12-day layoff, by erupting for 41 points in the final half and limiting the Lady Hawks to only 18 points on 5-of-24 field goals.
Guards Taylor Lewis and Tosha Tyler scored 12 points apiece in the second half to lead NSU. Lewis finished with a game-high 17 and Tyler added 14. Sarah Green had seven rebounds for the RiverHawks as well.
Northeastern State will take on Saginaw Valley State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the final day of the event.
