RiverHawks Battle Angelo State Saturday
SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Northeastern State women head to Texas to play Lone Star Conference South Division member Angelo State in a 2 p.m. contest Saturday as the RiverHawks to for their third consecutive victory.
The RiverHawks are coming off an impressive 53-49 win over Drury and improved its overall record to 8-3 for the season. The Rambelles are 5-5 for the season and are seeking to rebound from an 88-80 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce last week.
"I expect its going be just like the last 10 years at Angelo, a real tough ball game," said Northeastern State head coach Randy Gipson.
"It will be interesting for our kids. We are finally at the end of the semester, when we've had a lot of travel. Finally our kids are going to play some games that they don't have to worry about classes, or exams. I think there is going to be some relieve.
"I believe we will go out with a good attitude and be excited to play. These games are good tests and get you ready for anything in the future. This is a good solid, well coach team. It's a long trip, so it will be a challenge," said Gipson.
Angelo enters the contest averaging 72.4 points on offense and is giving up 68.4 points defensively. The Rambelles' offensive punch is led by 6-1 sophomore center Paige Weishuhn, who is averaging 16.1 points a game. Paige is shooting .560 from the field and leads the Rams in rebounds by pulling down 6.1 caroms a game.
Paige is also deadly from behind the arc, connecting on 19-of-31 attempts for a .613 percentage mark.
Only one other Rambelle is averaging in double figures, Carmile Perkins, 5-7 junior guard. Perkins is averaging 15.2 points, connecting on .477 from the field and .410 from behind the 3-point line.
Angelo State and Northeastern State have played two common opponents this season, St. Mary's and University of Texas-Permian Basin. Angelo State as well as the RiverHawks narrowly lost to St. Mary's while rolling over UT-Permian Basin.
Northeastern State has only one player scoring in double figures and that's junior forward Jasmine Webb. Webb is scoring10.9 points, connecting on .545 from the field and is NSU's leading rebounder averaging 5.4 boards a game.
Sophomore Alix Perkins is scoring 9.4 points followed by Cristy Nitz at 7.7 and Jessica White, who was selected the LSC North Division defensive player of the week, averaging 6.8 points a game.
The RiverHawks enter the Angelo State contest scoring 62.4 points a game and allowing the opposition just 53.9 points, to rank second in the conference and 16th nationally in NCAA Division II play.
