RiverHawks Win Home Opener
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State opened its women's home basketball season in convincing fashion Sunday afternoon, rolling past Missouri Southern State University 67-50 at Jack Dobbins Field House.
The RiverHawks, behind the 26-point scoring point performance of junior Jasmine Webb of Owasso. improved to 3-1 on the season. The RiverHawks resume play on Nov. 20th when they travel to play St. Mary's of Texas in San Antonio, Texas.
Webb was 9-of-11 from the field and 7-of- 11 at the free throw line for her 26-point output. She was one rebound shy of a double-double, collecting nine boards.
"Jasmine (Webb) broke out and she was ready for the home opener," said RiverHawks head coach Randy Gipson. "Her veteran status helped her and we needed it, especially in the first half," said Gipson.
"She didn't score down in Florida, but today she finished shots. I think we were getting better movement and getting her open a little better today. She got some better looks and she played with a lot of confidence. That was the main thing," said Gipson.
Northeastern State shot 40 percent from the field (21-of-52) while holding the Lions to just a 36 percent shooting performance (18-of-50) in their season opener. The RiverHawks outrebounded the taller Lions 39-34, including 10-8 on the offensive boards.
The RiverHawks held an eight-point lead at the intermission before racing to its largest lead of the game 21 points with 4:22 remaining in the game 65-44 when Webb canned a free throw.
Northeastern State's defense held the Lions to just six points over the final 8:49 of the game.
Missouri Southern never lead in the game as the RiverHawks jumped out to a 19-10 lead behind Webb, Sarah Miller and Kendra Dean.
The RiverHawks' Jessica White followed Webb in the scoring with nine points with Alix Perkins adding eight.
The Lions' were led by Jolea Apon's 14 points and Randi Hendeson's eight.
