RiverHawks Roll Over Texas A&M-Commerce

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Northeastern State dismantled visiting Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday  night at Jack Dobbins Field House romping to an impressive 67-49  Lone Star Conference North Division victory.

The victory improves the RiverHawks record to 17-5 overall and 6-1 in the LSC North Division race. Texas A&M-Commerce is 4-15 and 1-5.

The RiverHawks once again won the game with its defense and outstanding rebounding holding a 52-25 advantage on the boards.

"We came out and set the tone by playing good defense," said Northeastern State head coach Randy Gipson. "I like how we played tonight. We didn't shoot well, but we played the game very well. I thought for the most part we were solid and moving the ball.

"We defended and rebounded well. And didn't have excessive turnovers. Overall it was just a real solid performance," said Gipson.

Jasmine Webb led the RiverHawks scoring with 16 points  followed by Kendra Dean, who came off the bench to score 13. Northeastern State shot 40 percent from the floor (27-of-67) but were just 14.8 percent on 3-point shots (4-of-27).

The Lions were held to 34 percent from the field (18-of-53) and 6-of-14 from behind the arc. Genevieve Campbell led the Lions scoring with 17 points with Mattilyn McIntyre adding 16.

Texas A&M-Commerce never led in the game as the RiverHawks took command early and held its largest lead of the game 31 points 53-22 with 12:33 remaining in the game.

The RiverHawks had no trouble the opening 20 minutes as Northeastern State raced to a 24-4 lead with 7:25 left in the half and held a comfortable 33-16 advantage at the half.

The RiverHawks' Webb led the way with 12 points, 8 of which came on put-back shots on offensive rebounds.

Northeastern State shot 42 percent in the half (15-of-35) and held the Lions to just 6-of-24 from the field for a meager 25 percent from the field. Texas A&M-Commerce never led in the half and did not score its first basket until the 15:16 mark of the half.

The RiverHawks and Lions will meet again on Saturday, this time across the Red River at Texas A&M-Commerce. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
