Nitz Named LSC North Academic Player of the Year

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. --- A total of 40 student-athletes were honored Tuesday as the Lone Star Conference women's basketball academic honors were announced by league officials at the LSC Awards Banquet in Bartlesville, Okla.

The recognition included an All-Academic Team, with an Academic Player of the Year, for the LSC North and South Divisions, plus a Commissioner's Honor Roll for each division.

Northeastern State's Cristy Nitz took LSC North Division Academic Player of the Year honors, while Abilene Christian's Jamie Meyer was the LSC South Division Academic Player of the Year.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have reached sophomore status and carry at least a 3.30 grade point average. The All-Academic Team is selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Honor Roll.

Nitz is a two-year starter who has appeared in 26 games this season with 25 starts. The sophomore pre-professional health major is second on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game. In LSC North action she is putting up 10.1 points per outing, shooting .524 from the field, .417 from three-point range and grabbing nearly four rebounds per contest.

Joining Nitz on the North Division All-Academic Team was teammate Sarah Millar, along with Southeastern Oklahoma's Destiny Brown, Southwestern Oklahoma's Madison Cabaniss and Central Oklahoma's Ashley Beckley.

Meyer leads the LSC in scoring with 20.2 points per game, which ranks 10th in the nation, and is 5th with 7.2 rebounds a game.  The senior early childhood education major has led the Wildcats in scoring 16 times this season.  A two-time All-LSC South Division performer, this is her third straight all-academic conference team selection.

On the South Division All-Academic Team with Meyer were teammates Jody Meyer and Kathryn Kundmueller, plus West Texas A&M's Holly Isaacs and Joni Unruh.
