RiverHawks Kick Newman
TAHLEQUAH, OKLA. - Northeastern State University men defeated Newman University 3-1 Friday on the RiverHawks pitch to go 5-2 for the season.
It was the RiverHawks third consecutive soccer victory and fifth on their home pitch. Newman fell to 2-5-1.
Northeastern State opened the scoring on a goal by Cory Cipollone, his first of the season at 15:43 of the opening half. Justin Cleland and Zach Schmoker assisted on the goal that was scored on a deflection.
Newman scored its only goal when Cion Sammuel on a pass from Brandon Carlos put the ball in the net at the 18:38 mark.
The RiverHawks' defense allowed Newman just seven shots in the match while Northeastern State had 16 shots on goal.
At the 57:25 mark, Northeastern State's Cipollone scored his second goal. This one came on a penalty kick, his second goal of the year.
Sam Vernalls made it 3-1 when he scored at 58:40 on an assist by Sambo Claros and Justin Cleland from 10-yards away.
The RiverHawks return to action Oct. 1. when they travel to Truman University for a 1 p.m. match.
