Luck of the RiverHawks!
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State had the ball bounce in its favor here Sunday afternoon.
The RiverHawks captured a 1-0 victory over Harding University on an own goal in overtime.
Northeastern State is off to its best start, 2-0, in the five-year tenure of head coach Bobby Peterson.
"We had a ton of opportunities in the match to score, as we hit the crossbar four or five times and it just wouldn't go in, but we'll take the win anyway we can." said Peterson.
"We had 11 or 12 quality opportunities to score before going into the overtime. I was real pleased with our play. We took a little bump, but I'm pleased to get the win. It was a real solid performance.''
The RiverHawks outshot Harding 16-8 in the match, including 12 cornerkicks. RiverHawks goalkeeper Brendon Lindsay was the recipient of some outstanding defensive play, as he made only three saves in the match.
The game-winning goal came on a cross from the RiverHawks' Zach Schmoker, just one-minute into the overtime.
Schmoker crossed the ball in front of the Harding goal and it deflected off the leg of a Harding defender into the net for the victory.
"This is the first time since I've been here we've started this fast and it feels good,'' said Peterson. "The guys are now on a roll and we came out of the match with no injuries.
"We had a good crowd for this match. We had everyone on the edge of their seat, so we are going to try and make it a little easier next time,'' said Peterson.
Northeastern State returns to the pitch on Sept. 4th with a road game at Wichita Falls, Texas, when the RiverHawks will play Regis (Colo.) .
