Upset Falls Short

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. ---- Midwestern State escaped Tahlequah for the second straight year with a victory in overtime as the Mustang's Casey Hibbs free kick from 25 yards out found the back of the net for a 3-2 victory over Northeastern State in Southwest Soccer Conference action.

 

The RiverHawks survived a flurry of shots from the Mustangs in the first half, before Rob Humphrey found the net with under a minute remaining to give Midwestern State a 1-0 lead at the break.

 

Northeastern State answered the goal early in the second half when Robert Yang's header from five yards out tied the match at 1-1. 

 

The RiverHawks took a 2-1 lead with seven minutes remaining in the match as Bo Evans was fouled in the box and Anthony Dingledine converted the penalty kick for the advantage.

 

Midwestern State had luck on its side. With three minutes remaining in the match, Brannon Calvert served the ball into the box and Bryan Sajjadi used a bicycle kick to tie the game at 2-2.

 

The goal forced overtime and set the stage for Hibbs's heroics at the end.

 

The Mustangs moved to 9-1 and 1-0 in conference play, as the RiverHawks fell to 2-10 and 1-3.

 

Next action for the RiverHawks will be on Wednesday October 15 against Missouri Southern.  Game time is set for 7:00 in Joplin.
