RiverHawks Blank Newman
WICHITA, KAN. --Northeastern State scored two second half goals to defeat Newman University 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a men's soccer match.
The victory lifts the RiverHawks to 6-3, entering there Lone Star Conference opener on Oct. 9 at home against Midwestern State University. Newman is now 2-6-2.
The RiverHawks scored eight minutes into the second half when Justin Cleland connected with Harrison Kutz on a shot off a corner kick from the right side of the goal. Kutz pushed the ball past Newman goalkeeper James Esquivel for the 1-0 lead.
Northeastern found the net again when Dustin Lyons ran the ball down the sideline and passed it to Sam Vernalls. Varnalls then sent the ball back to Lyons, who returned it to Vernalls, who put the ball into the net giving the RiverHawks a 2-0 advantage
The RiverHawks outshot the Jets 14-6 in the match. In the defensive match Northeastern State allowed the Jets just one shot on goal and it resulted in a save by RiverHawks goalkeeper Matt Murrell
