Nelson Honored by GCAA
NORMAN, Okla. --- Northeastern State's Casey Nelson was one of 104 players across the nation named to the 2011 NCAA Division II PING All-Region Team.
Nelson, a junior from Carrollton, Texas, was chosen to the South Central All-Region squad. The Sam Houston State transfer was NSU's lone selection. Head coach Scott Varner was pleased with his student-athlete's honor.
"This is a very deserving honor for Casey. Quite clearly he was the leader of our team, on and off the golf course this year. Had it not been for his play, it would have been more difficult for us to reach the NCAA Tournament again this year," said Varner.
"He turned a five-under-par 67 at Grand Canyon in what was the low round of the year for us. By making the All-Region team, he is now has a good chance at becoming All-America. Our region had an extremely talented group of golfer, including the player of the year. Regardless, I am very proud of what Casey accomplished this year."
