Golf Fails to Make Move

BLAINE, Wash. --- A pair of underclassmen led Northeastern State in the third round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships on Thursday. However, the RiverHawks failed to move any in the team standings.

Josh Boswell carded a one-over-par 72 and Blake Walker had a two-over 73. Yet, Northeastern State, at 908, remained in 11th place in the overall team standings heading into Friday's final 18 holes at Loomis Trail Golf Club.

California State University-San Bernardino has a commanding eight stroke lead over the 20-team field. CSUSB, thanks in part to individual leader, Gene Webster's even-par performance thus far, has a 54-hole total of 879. Barry University, which led the first two rounds, slipped into second with a lackluster 304 but still is within striking distance at 887. Columbus State and Sonoma State are tie for third just a shot behind Barry, the 2007 national champion, at 888.

North Alabama put up the best round of the day with its 6-over-par 290 and is in sixth place.

Boswell and Walker were steady performers for the RiverHawks, while seniors Kevin King, Jeff Cox and Sam Powell all struggled. Cox overcame Wednesday's brutal round of 82 with a five-over 76 and King fired 8-over, 79. Powell had the worst collegiate round if his career by posting an 80.
