Gipson Takes Medical Leave
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State men's basketball head coach, Larry Gipson, announced today he is taking a medical leave of absence from the university. Gipson, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, is scheduled to undergo prostatectomy surgery at a Tulsa hospital Tuesday morning.
"I am receiving great medical care and this was caught early," said Gipson, who is in his 15th season as head coach at NSU. "I fully expect to return this season after the recovery process and I am looking forward to coaching this team."
Tony Duckworth, NSU's director of athletics and chief athletics officer, expressed concern, but is optimistic Gipson will return to his coaching duties shortly.
"Our number one focus is on coach Larry Gipson's health," said Tony Duckworth. "I am encouraged by the prognosis of Larry having a successful surgery and returning to lead the RiverHawks within the next four-to-six weeks."
Jon Havens, assistant coach, has been named interim head coach during Gipson's medical leave of absence. Havens is in his second season with the RiverHawks.
"Coach Gipson and I have been putting a plan together over the past five or six weeks," said Duckworth. :We are fortunate to have an assistant coach of Jon Haven's caliber to serve as a our interim head men's basketball coach during this period."
