NSU Stuns Gorillas

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- John Schneider recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as Northeastern State shocked Pittsburg State, 71-60, in men's college basketball action at Dobbins Field House Wednesday night.

Schneider's double-double was the first for NSU (4-14) since March 3, 2010. PSU fell to 10-7.

The Gorillas took a 27-23 lead into intermission after hitting 10-of-20 field goals in the first frame while limiting NSU to just 9-of-26. However, five of NSU's shots were from 3-point range as the team stayed within striking distance.

PSU led by as many as five in the second half, 54-49, on JaVon McGee's follow-up dunk with 7:01 left. But, McGee was whistled for a technical foul for taunting and Northeastern State reeled off the next 13 points to take a 62-54 advantage at the 4:11 mark.

The Gorillas got no closer than four the rest of the way. Pitt State whittled its deficit to 63-59 with 2:20 left, but only managed one free throw the rest of the way. The RiverHawks ended the game with pinpoint accuracy at the line by converting 8-of-10 charity tosses to preserve the victory.

McGee led Pittsburg State with 13 points and six rebounds. Marky Nolen and Andra Bailey added 12 and 11, respectively.

Behind Schneider, NSU got offensive help from Jon Miller with 16 points and Justin Johnson added 15 and eight rebounds. The RiverHawks were a sterling 13-of-21 from the floor in the second half and hit 4-of-8 treys as well.

Northeastern State will play at Lindenwood on Saturday at 4 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
