Schneider, NSU Ground Jets

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Success breeds confidence. Just ask Northeastern State's basketball team.

The RiverHawks won their second game in three days Wednesday with a convincing 71-48 decision over Newman University at Dobbins Field House in what may arguably have been NSU's best overall game of the year. The victory also avenged a 47-46 loss to Newman earlier this season.

John Schneider poured through a game-high 17 points to lead a trio of double digit scorers for the RiverHawks (3-12). Schneider was a sterling 6-of-8 from the floor, five-for-five at the line and grabbed seven rebounds in 29 minutes of action. Jon Miller and Ethan Anderson added 14 apiece for Northeastern State as well.

NSU opened up a 19-9 lead seven minutes into the contest only to see the Jets (8-4) storm back with an 8-0 run to pull with 19-17 at the midway point of the first half. Newman got as close as one twice (21-20 and 23-22) before NSU responded with back-to-back treys from Christian Mack and Anderson and a pair of free throws from Schneider to regain the momentum and a 32-22 cushion with 1:38 left in the half.

NU, which trailed 32-26 at the break, got no closer than that the rest of the way. The RiverHawks answered every Jet rally with one of their own. Justin Johnson and Miller canned 3-pointers on successive NSU possessions and Anderson made two free throws to extend the lead to 47-32 with 13:48 to go and the rout was on.

Northeastern State shot 19-of-21 from the line and made 8-of-20 treys, while its defense limited the Jets to 1-of-13 from behind the arc. NSU also owned a 41-29 advantage on the boards, with Zach Jones collecting 10 rebounds. The lone team blemish was 14 turnovers against Newman's full-court pressure.

Eric Saunders, who had the game-winning basket in Wichita in the first meeting this year, finished with a team-high 12 points for NU.

NSU, which shot 44 percent from the floor for the game, also got seven points from Johnson and Mack and six from Jones.

The RiverHawks will be idle until Jan. 20 when they host arch-rival Central Oklahoma at 8 p.m. in Dobbins Field House.
