RiverHawks to Play Southeastern State
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State fresh off a stunning 70-66 victory over Southwestern State University plays host to Southeastern State University Wednesday night at Jack Dobbins Field House. Tip-off for the Lone Star Conference North Division game is 8 p. m.
The RiverHawks will be seeking to extend its five-game winning
streak and improve on its 11-5 season mark and keep intact its
unbeaten record in the LSC North Division. Northeastern State is
currently atop the LSC North at 2-0 tied with University of
University of Central Oklahoma (13-4, 2-0) and Texas
A&M-Commerce (13-4, 2-0).
Southeastern State enters the game against the RiverHawks 5-11
overall and 0-1 in LSC North Division play. The Savage Storm lost
is North Division opener to UCO last Saturday night 94-62 in
Edmond. Mychal Horn, 5-10 sophomore guard from Alexandria, La., led
the Savage Storm with 16 points against the Bronchos. Horn also had
a team-high four assists in the game.
Horn is Southeastern’s second leading scorer with an 11.2
average. He is shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 14.6
from behind the arc and at the free throw line he has knocked down
45-of-68 for a 66.2 percent mark.
Darrell Hicks and William Slones also scored in double figures
against the Bronchos, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively. Hicks,
6-4 junior guard from Jennings, La., is a transfer from Bevil State
Community College, where he was an All-Region selection averaging
21 points.
Hicks is Southeastern’s leading scorer on the season with an
11.9 scoring average. Hicks is shooting 33.6 percent from the field
and 29.2 on 3-point shots. He is 69.8 shooter at the free throw
line.
Slones is a 6-8 post senior post from Orlando, Fla., a second team
All-LSC North Division selection a year ago, is averaging 10.3
points an outing, and is shooting 54.8 percent from the field, and
65.9 at the free throw line. Slones is Southeastern’s leading
rebounder, pulling down 8.3 boards a game.
Southeastern comes into Jack Dobbins Field House averaging 59.8
points on offense while giving up 67.1 on the defensive end.
The RiverHawks are averaging 67.8 points on offense led by the
play of pre-season All-American candidate Jason Jones, 6-8 senior
post, was an All-LSC North Division selection last season. Jones,
who played in the Southwestern game with a touch of the flu, scored
only seven points, but his 3-point shot with 28-seconds remaining
gave NSU the win. Jones comes into the Southeastern game with a
15.0 scoring average.
Jones is shooting 54 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent on
3-point shots. At the free throw line he is connecting on 86
percent of his attempts (80-of-93) while leading the RiverHawks in
rebounds with 137 for 8.6 boards per game average.
Dominique Gaines who has been phenomenal since joining the
RiverHawks in December, has played in eight games, starting six,
and has become NSU’s leading point producer with an 18-point
scoring average. Against Southwestern State he scored 22 points and
scored a season high 32 against Cameron on Jan. 13th in Lawton.
Gaines is knocking down his shots from the field at 44.8 percent.
Marlon Burnett and Antoine Branch are averaging 13.3 and 11.3
points respectively for the RiverHawks. Burnett is shooting 49
percent from the field and Branch 40 percent.
Following the Southeastern State game, the RiverHawks will go on
the road Saturday to play East Central University in Ada for a 4
p.m. tip-off.
