RiverHawks Go For Sweep at Southeastern
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Northeastern State will go after its third straight victory and attempt to solidify its hold on second place in the Lone Star Conference North Division when the RiverHawks travel to Durant to play Southeastern State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m,.
The RiverHawks are 6-1 in the LSC North and hold a two-game lead over Texas A&M-Commerce and Southeastern State at 4-3 in the standings. The Savage Storm is 9-13 entering the Northeastern State clash as the RiverHawks go for a sweep against Southeastern. The RiverHawks will attempt to snap the Savage Storm's four-game winning streak.
Northeastern State defeated the Savage Storm 45-40 at Jack Dobbins Field House on January 20th. In that contest the RiverHawks overcame its poorest shooting performance of the season, 29 percent, to get the victory.
Dominique Gaines, the RiverHawks leading scorer with an 18.8 average, was held to just 14 points.
Jason Jones with a 15.2 average led the RiverHawks in the Southeastern win with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Jones is the LSC's No. 2 rebounder with 8.2 boards per game.
Marlon Burnett, who is averaging 12.5 points a game, scored only two points in the first game against the Savage Storm, while Antoine Branch, who is scoring 10.1 points a game, was held to 3 points in the last meeting.
Northeastern State comes into the Southeastern State game averaging 67.9 points a game and giving up just 60.8 points, No.2 in the Lone Star Conference in points allowed.
Southeastern State defeated arch-rival East Central last week in overtime 63-61 when William Slones, who scored 17 points, drained two free throws in the second overtime to get the win. Slones also pulled down 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
The Savage Storm enters the Northeastern State clash with a 59.4 scoring average with Darrell Hicks the top scorer at 13.3 points and Mychal Horn follows at 10.8 points. Southeastern State is giving up 64.2 points a game.
Following the Southeastern State game the RiverHawks will battle East Central University Saturday at Jack Dobbins Field House at 4 p.m.
