RiverHawks Play for Second Place in LSC North Division

Tahlequah, Okla. - Northeastern State will seek to move into sole possession of second place in the Lone Star Conference North Division standings Wednesday night when the RiverHawks entertain Texas A&M-Commerce at Jack Dobbins Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The RiverHawks and Lions are deadlocked in second place at 4-1, two games behind league leader Central Oklahoma, who is unbeaten in the division race at 6-0. Northeastern State is 13-7 overall after falling to UCO on Monday night 84-50. Texas A&M-Commerce is 15-5 on the season after also losing to Central Oklahoma 103-91 last Wednesday night.

Commerce led the Bronchos 68-60 with 12:24 to go in the game before UCO took command on 3-point shots. In the UCO clash the Lions had five players score in double figures led by junior Brian Singleton, 6-2 guard, a transfer from Jones County (Miss.) Community College, who scored a season-high 27 points on the strength of five 3-pointers.He also pulled down a team high 7 rebounds. Singleton is averaging 13 points an outing.

Brad Hambrick, 5-11 sophomore guard, scored 17 points, 15 on 3-pointers, while Ronnie Morgan, 6-6 senior forward  added 14 points while Preston Whitley, 6-3 freshman forward and Cardell Hunter, 6-2 senior guard scored 13 and 11 points respectively against UCO.

The Lions are averaging 76.8 points on offense and are giving up 70 points to the opposition. Commerce has won four of its last five games and are 2-0 on the road in conference games.

The RiverHawks are the top defensive club in the LSC North Division giving up just 58.3 points a game and ranks No. 7 in Division II and No. 4 in field goal percentage defense at 32.5.

The RiverHawks are coming off the loss to Central Oklahoma in which the Bronchos were sizzling from behind the arc, shooting 50 percent, connecting on 17-of-34 on trey attempts.

Dominique Gaines, who was held to 12 points in the Central Oklahoma game, leads the RiverHawks in scoring, averaging 18.3 points an outing.

Preseason Division II All-American candidate Jason Jones, comes into the Commerce game with a 15.7 scoring average. He is pulling down 8.8 rebounds a game. Against Central Oklahoma, Jones scored 14 points and was the only other RiverHawk to score in double digits.

Marlon Burnett follows on the RiverHawks scoring chart at 11.9 points a game, with Antoine Branch scoring at 10.1 points a clip.

Northeastern State is 2-0 in conference play on its home floor and 7-2 in non-conference encounters.

The RiverHawks will turnaround on Saturday and play Texas A&M-Commerce on the Lions home floor beginning at 4 p.m.
