RiverHawks Battle Angelo State Saturday
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Northeastern State men travel across the Red River to play the first of two games this weekend in Lone Star Conference crossover games.
The first stop is against the Angelo State Rams in a 4 p.m. clash Saturday. Both the RiverHawks and Rams are 5-3 on the season.
LeMarshall Corbett, a 6-3 junior guard, a junior college transfer from Kilgore, leads the Rams in scoring with a 25.6 average. Corbett is connecting on .566 of his field goal attempts and .587 on 3-point attempts. At the free throw line he has converted 52-of-59 for a .881 percentage mark.
"Corbett is the leading scorer in the conference and we will have our hands full," said Northeastern State head coach Larry Gipson. "We are going to have to contain him somehow. He's averaging over 25 points a game and 60 percent from the field.
"We are going to have to play very well defensively. We are going to have to rotate people on him. The rest of the team we will have to closely contest their shots."
Also scoring in double figures for the Rams are 6-4 senior guard Stavon Williams, a transfer from Utah State and Johnny Barnes, 6-6, senior forward. Williams and Barnes are scoring 11.1 and 10.1 points respectively.
The RiverHawks are led by 6-7 senior post Jason Jones, who was selected the Lone Star Conference North Division Offensive Player of the Week.
Jones, who is averaging 17.4 points an outing, scored a career high 28 points, with 9 rebounds against Texas A&M-Kingsville last week. For the three games last week Jones averaged 21.7 points and 10 rebounds.
The senior post is followed in scoring by Marlon Burnett at 14.8 points, Antoine Branch at 12.3 points a game.
The RiverHawks enter the game averaging 69.6 points a game, and 54.9 points to the opposition. The RiverHawks are the leading defensive team in the Lone Star Conference and rank fourth in the nation in defense in NCAA Division II play.
Angleo State averages 76.6 points on offense while allowing the opposition 72.0 points a game.
