McVay Grabs All-America Honors
UPDATED
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Trey McVay is an All-American.
After establishing every record for wide receivers in Northeastern State football history this season, the Fort Gibson senior was named AP Little All-America 1st Team on Friday, and to the Daktronics 2011 All-America Football Team as a first team selection earlier this week.
McVay becomes the first NSU player to earn AP Little All-America honors since 2002 when offensive lineman Micah Lomas was selected. Other AP All-Americans from Northeastern State include Rod Kelly, a defensive lineman in 2000, and Cedric Mack, a wide receiver, in 1982.
McVay, who caught 82 passes for 1,533 yards in 2011 alone, was joined on the first team at wide receiver by Thomas Mayo of California (Penn.). McVay ranked second in NCAA Division II this year in receiving yards per game and was No. 17 nationally in receptions per contest.
During his stellar 4-year NSU career, McVay caught 195 passes for 3,016 yards and 34 touchdowns. He averaged 153.8 all-purpose yards in 2011 and had 3,985 all-purpose yards in his career.
Earlier this season, McVay caught 16 passes and set an NCAA record for all divisions with 425 receiving yards. His six touchdown catches that day, against Harding, helped the RiverHawks hold off the Bisons in dramatic fashion.
The team, which is sponsored by Datronics, Inc., an acknowledged leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems, is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
