Football Slate Released for 2009

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Six home games, including a back-to-back homestand to begin the year, highlights Northeastern State University's 2009 football schedule, head coach Kenny Evans announced today. The RiverHawks will feature an 11-game schedule this season.

The 2009 campaign begins on Thursday, Aug. 27, with traditional opening-night rival, Arkansas Tech, at 7:00 p.m., followed by Tarleton State on Saturday night, Sept. 5, also at 7:00.

"Having six home games on our schedule is rather unique, but in these economically tough times we are excited to bring as many NCAA football games to our campus as possible," said Evans. "Our coaches and student-athletes are working hard to restore Northeastern State football to a championship-caliber program. I truly believe our alumni and fans will enjoy watching our student-athletes perform this year, not only at home, but on the road as well."

Other home games include East Central on Sept. 26, Southwestern Oklahoma on Oct. 10, Southeastern Oklahoma on Oct. 24 and West Texas A&M on Oct. 31.

Every home game will have a promotion this year. One such event will be a "Retro Game" on Oct. 10 when the RiverHawks host Southwestern Oklahoma. Northeastern State will adorn "Redmen" jerseys that game and fans will have the opportunity to purchase them afterwards. Details of the promotion will be released at a later date.

The annual Homecoming Game will be played Saturday, Oct. 24, when Northeastern State hosts Southeastern Oklahoma at 2 p.m.

"Northeastern State is committed to the honor and tradition from all our athletic programs," said Jeff Konya, Director of Athletics. "The Retro Game is way we can pay tribute to the many accomplishments made by these individuals."

The RiverHawks will take to the road on Sept.12 when they meet Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. The longest trip of the season comes just a week later, Sept. 19, at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The other three road games are at Texas A&M-Commerce (Oct. 3), at Southwest Baptist (Oct. 17) and at Central Oklahoma for the regular season finale (Nov. 7).

Last week, Northeastern State announced it will play at the University of North Dakota on Sept. 18, 2010. This is the first-ever Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formally NCAA-IAA) opponent in the history of Northeastern State football.
