Daniels Inks with RiverHawks
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Dakota Daniels, a standout catcher at Prairie Grove (Ark.) High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent with Northeastern State University.
Daniels is the first early signee for new baseball head coach Travis Janssen and the RiverHawks. Daniels will be an incoming freshman in August 2012.
"Catching is one of our biggest needs when looking at the 2013 team and we think we have helped address that need with Dakota Daniels," said Jansssen. "He is a catcher who has a very good arm and he is excited about coming to NSU. His defense will make us better immediately."
Daniels hit .338 last year with 12 doubles, 20 RBI and 20 runs scored. He also stole 10 bases for head coach Mitch Cameron's squad.
"As a three-year starter, I have seen Dakota grow up into a mature catcher," said Cameron. "Becoming a catcher is more than just catching the ball and he has been able to learn how to manage a game by calling pitches and controlling the tempo of the game. Having him behind the plate with his strong arm has really helped control the running game.
"He has the ability to block really well and that helps our pitchers have confidence in throwing the ball instead of being afraid to throw it in the dirt, especially with a runner on third base. He is going to be a valuable asset to our team this year and will be missed as a leader and catcher on our team."
Daniels played summer Senior Legion ball with current NSU student-athlete, Preston Cash. Janssen said Daniels' best baseball days are ahead of him.
"Dakota is not only a good player on the field, but is a good student with high character as well," said Janssen. "We are very excited he has come aboard with the RiverHawks."
