RiverHawks Trip UAFS
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Andrew White pitched eight solid innings and Northeastern State edged Arkansas-Ft. Smith, 5-3, in a non-conference game at Rousey Field Friday afternoon.
Despite horrible playing conditions for April -- light rain falling, temperatures in the low-40s and winds gusting over 30 miles per hour -- the RiverHawks improved to 6-28 overall while UAFS fell to 15-18.
White improved to 2-3 on the year. Although he scattered eight hits, the senior fanned a season-high nine hitters before giving way to Miles Yarnell in the ninth. Yarnell, a freshman, logged his first career save.
The RiverHawks led 4-1 heading into the middle innings before UA-Ft. Smith pushed a run across in each of the seventh and eighth innings to pull within 4-3.
NSU sealed the game in the bottom of the eighth when T.J. Brewer cracked an RBI single to center field with two outs to score Dan Skelly from second base. That's all Yarnell needed to close the door in the ninth. He struck out two, walked one, but got help from Skelly who gunned down Gordon Miller on his attempt to steal second.
Skelly and Jarrod Huneryager belted home runs for the RiverHawks, who managed just five hits as a team. David Zavala had two hits, including a double.
The two teams will play a single 9-inning game in Ft. Smith on Saturday at 4 p.m.
