Texas A&M-Kingsville Sweeps RiverHawks

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville swept a doubleheader from Northeastern State Sunday afternoon in at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, winning 7-6 and 11-1 in the Lone Star Conference games.

The twin loss drops the RiverHawks to 13-17 for the year and 11-13 in LSC play. The Javelians improve to 17-13 and 13-11 in league play.

The RiverHawks pounded out 10 hits in the opener against three Kingsville pitchers with Angel Hernandez, Greg Jackson and Chris Gallegos collecting two hits each.

Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on three base hits, with Hernandez and Gallegos driving in runs. The Javelins scored a run in their half of the first, before tying the game at 2-all in the fourth inning.

The RiverHawks regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 6-2 lead after 5 ½ innings.  In the fifth NSU used two base hits and one Javelina error to score twice, while leaving three runs on base.

In the sixth, the RiverHawks scored two runs on two hits, a Hernandez RBI single scoring Greg Jackson, who reached safely on a single and a sacrifice fly by Eric McKinney, allowing Noah Ringenberger to score from third.

The Javelinas then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth on five base hits and added a run in the seventh to get the victory. NSU’s Jason Travis took the loss in relief. Travis is now 0-2 for the year.

In the second game Kingsville led from the outset, pounding out 19 base hits against four RiverHawk pitchers. The Javelinas scored three runs in the first, two more in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Northeastern got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Brian Espinal singled home Ringenberger, who had singled to open the inning.

 Kingsville increased its lead to 7-1 with two runs in the fourth and added a single run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh for the 11-1 win.

RiverHawks Shay Colburn took the loss (2-4) going three innings before being relieved by Bruce Compton, followed by Adam Hibdon and John Dean.
