BOLIVAR, Mo. – Another day, another walk off loss for Northeastern State. This time it was at the hands of Southwest Baptist who scored the game's lone run in the tenth inning on Thursday afternoon in the second game of a MIAA doubleheader.
Haley Acrey accounted for all of the RiverHawks' offense with a solo-homer in the fourth inning to give her team a 1-0 win in the opener. Â
In the last two weeks, Northeastern State has been taken to extras five times, with all of them coming as walk off losses.  Since the start of the season, the RiverHawks have played in seven extra inning contests, its most since 2007.
Gail Young (11-10) spun a gem for NSU in the opening game, tossing a one-hit contest into the seventh inning. The NSU freshman, finished the day with a career high seven strikeouts, and three hits allowed.
In the nightcap, the RiverHawks were limited to four hits with
Sierra Crick having two.
Thursday's defensive highlight came in the ninth inning with SBU having runners on first and second with two outs. Â
Kaleigh Hinkle made a diving stop at the ball and while on the ground, she threw back to
Kelsey Harmon who made an on-target throw to
Kyla Ibarra at home to prevent the winning run from scoring.
However, the momentum was short-lived for the RiverHawks with Southwest Baptist reaching on its first two batters in the tenth. A wild pitch advanced the runners and the Bearcats would win the game on a fielder's choice infield chopper.Â
Sydney Balderrama (11-5) went 9 innings for Northeastern State with a pair of strikeouts.
The split sends the RiverHawks to 23-18 overall and 11-7 in the MIAA, Southwest Baptist will go to 14-25 (4-10 MIAA).
Northeastern State will be off until April 9 where they will host Central Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader starting a 1 p.m.
