JOPLIN, Mo. -- Northeastern State's
Kelsey Harmon pounded out seven hits, including a home run and triple leading the RiverHawks to a split on day one of the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament. The RiverHawks dropped a 2-1 decision to McKendree in the opener, but rallied for a 7-2 win in the nightcap on Saturday.
The RiverHawks are now 6-8 on the year.
In game one of the day, Harmon notched her first home run of the year, but was not enough as McKendree pitcher Miranda Gajewski allowed just NSU two hits in the 2-1 loss.  Northeastern State pitcher
Gail Young (3-3) went the distance allowing the two runs and eight hits on the day.
The Bearcats broke open the pitcher's duel in the sixth inning with a pair of doubles that plated the first run of the game.  McKendree pushed another run across in the seventh for the 2-0 advantage heading into the NSU seventh inning.  Harmon's blast in the frame was all NSU could produce in a 2-1 loss.
Kaleigh Hinkle collected the other NSU hit in the game.
In the nightcap, the offense that was missing in the opener came alive in a 7-2 victory over Rockhurst.  Harmon led the offensive onslaught going a perfect 4-4 with a triple and two RBI's. Â
Sydney Balderrama (3-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out four on the day.Â
NSU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as
Paige Gann's sacrifice fly plated
Sierra Crick.  The lead would grow in the fourth, a two-run single from Hinkle and a single from
Delaney Neal pushed the NSU lead to 4-0 after four innings.
The RiverHawks lead was cut in half after allowing a run in the fifth and sixth innings before closing the door with a three run seventh to pick up the 7-2 victory.
NSU will continue play tomorrow morning against Drury at 10 a.m. and close the day against Sioux Falls at 12 p.m.
